Growing up, my mom took pictures constantly. She adored her camera and cherished the moments captured. Even better than just taking photos, she printed them. And made sure that they ended up in albums (or at least boxes when album organization was not in the cards). I am so grateful for those photographs (yes, even the ones that I hated at the time…you know, being a teenager with braces, etc.)! The stories told are of matching sister outfits, sun bleached hair, the bathing suit I was sure I would hate and then wore daily that summer, the arrival of a third sister, lost teeth, summer friendships at camp…the list goes on and on and tells the story of my childhood. Sure, there are pictures of the whole family smiling on the front porch. You know, the holiday card shots. And I love those because they typically marked another year of growth and change. But what I can’t seem to get enough of are the photographs that tell the stories. The ones that make me pull the album close to my face to see what game we were playing, how our home was decorated, or the soft texture of the couch where we shared countless snuggles. I am flooded with emotion by those details and genuine family moments.
As a mom myself, my love of stories has encouraged my camera to do something different. To step outside of the box of traditional posed portraiture to offer genuine, intimate, and authentic images of your family. I am thrilled to present to you my version of storytelling…
How it works:
My custom storytelling sessions begin with us chatting about the places you go and the things you do with the people you love. We brainstorm until we come up with the perfect match. Sessions take place in and around your home or in a location that is familiar to your family. If you are having a home session, no need to clean like you are hosting the family for the holidays. Simply clearing the counters and decluttering a bit will give us the perfect backdrop for telling your story. I completely understand that some people are more comfortable in front of a camera than others and am prepared to offer as much or as little guidance as necessary during our session. I will occasionally direct you to areas with beautiful light or suggest activities as we go along but the focus will be on capturing your story. No stiff posing. No “say cheese.” No stress.
Whether it’s a pancake breakfast on a Saturday morning, bringing your precious newborn through your front door for the first time, an afternoon adventure at your favorite park, or a first birthday surrounded by loved ones, you get to just be you. And I’ll be there capturing the memories you will cherish for a lifetime. Oh and the “holiday card” shot? Don’t worry, we’ll get that one too! But the main focus of our time together will be on capturing your life as it is today. Your story.
